About Bijni

Bijni is a small town and a town area committee in the Chirang district in Assam. Bijni is a culturally developed place and the people and culture of Bijni form the most part of the tourism of the place.

History of Bijni

The name Bijni is believed to have derived from the name of the Koch king Chandra Narayan aka Bijit Narayan. Chandra Narayan founded the kingdom of Bijni in 1617. The Koches ruled Bijni from 1671 till 1864. Bijni came under the control of the Bhutanese when they attacked Assam. Bijni was attacked by Jhawlia, one of the chiefs of the Bhutan army and later the region moved to Dumuria.

In 1897 the region faced a major earthquake following which many parts were destroyed. Bijni was a flourishing area but following the Zamindari system it started loosing its importance. In 1956 Bijni came under the direct control of the government of India which ended the rule of the Koches.

Geography and Economy of Bijni

The Bijni town is situated at 26.52 degrees north and 90.67 degrees east. Bijni is situated at an elevation of 173 feet. Bijni is surrounded by Kawatika village, Amguri and Gerukabari area.
The major income of the Bijni town comes from agriculture and related activities. Rice is the main agricultural product sown. Potato sugarcane and jute are also grown with prominence in agriculture.

According to 2001 India census the population of Bijni was 12,607 of which 52% is male and 48% is female. The average literacy rate of Bijni is 79% comprising 84% lame and 73% female literacy. The main population of Bijni comprises of the Koch Rajbongshis and the Bodos. There are many numbers of schedule caste and schedule tribe populations in Bijni.

Tourists can visit Manas National Park, situated 64 km from Bijni and takes 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the park. Manas National park is known for possessing unique bio diversity and scenic landscapes. It is one of the first reserves included in the tiger reserve network under project tiger in 1973.

Sri Surya Pahar

Sri Surya Pahar is located at a distance of 75 km from Bijni and it takes 1 h 32 minute to reach the place from Bijni. A significant archaeological site, Sri Surya Pahar is a site having  several rock-cut Shivalingas. There are also rock cut images of deities of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain pantheon.
